The Village of North Haven Launches
"Kick Ticks Out of North Haven"

Background
Ticks and tick-borne diseases are an ever-growing threat to our community, our way of life, to our health and the health of our pets.

Eight years ago, the Village of North Haven established a Tick and Deer Management Program in cooperation with Chris Miller Horticulture Specialist and Woods and Wave Management. The programs successfully reduced the tick population in the Village of North Haven and maintained the deer population at a healthy level, for humans, pets and deer.

These programs can only run effectively if they are properly and consistently deployed, and supported by the community!
Over the last two years, the tick program has lost effectiveness when the DEC changed the policy to deploy 4-Poster stations, causing a dramatic 144% increase of ticks in the Village of North Haven, albeit still lower than our surrounding communities and all of Long Island.

“Kick Ticks Out of North Haven”
Today, the Village of North Haven is launching “Kick Ticks Out of North Haven” to revitalize and strengthen our historically successful deer and tick management programs.
“Kick Ticks Out of North Haven” is a two-pronged program focused on dramatically reducing ticks that will only succeed with the support of the majority of North Haven residents:

1)     Tick Management Program - Significantly increase the number of 4-Poster stations.   A 4-Poster station uses a corn-baiting system with 4 posts that are equipped with pre-treated rollers. As deer consume the corn, the tickicide on the rollers is transferred onto their ears, neck and head. This disrupts the adult tick reproductive cycle; subsequently reducing the tick population.

North Haven has proven, by consistently taking ground drag samples and counting ticks, at the same time of year, in the same locations for many years, that 4-Poster stations reduce ticks. It is a FACT. Strategically placing 4-Poster stations throughout North Haven, will provide better coverage to kill ticks at the source. This approach is arguably more effective than the application of pesticides on individual properties.  If North Haven is able to deploy 25-35 4-Poster stations we may approach eradication of the tick population.  In order to deploy 4-Poster stations, per DEC policy, we need consent from all homeowners residing within 745 feet of each 4-Poster station, thus support from the community is key to achieve success. Click HERE for more info.

2)     Deer Management Program - Complementing our Village of North Haven Tick Management Program is the Village of North Haven Deer Management Program. The Deer Management Program maintains the size of the deer population at healthy levels through our professionally managed and vetted huntsman. Click HERE for more info.
